In part 1of this blog post series I showed you how to create a .NET Assembly Connector to read data from a flat file. This blog post shows you how to register an external content type associated with a .NET Assembly Connector with the SharePoint search search service so you can index and search the data coming from the external content type.

The Business Context

As I mentioned in part 1 of this blog post series, it’s commonplace to find critical business data stored inside flat files in large, mature organizations. In addition to being able to browse the data inside web pages, your end users typically want to search for data in the flat file data sources.

The Solution

The SharePoint search service provides the ability to index and search external content types. You may be surprised to see how easy it is to set up the search service to index and search external content sources. This process is very easy to do, in fact it’s really not that much different than it was in the last version of SharePoint. The key methods and properties which allow you to index and search data from an external type are covered in part 1. After you have an external content type registered with the SharePoint 2010 Business Data Connectivity (BDC) service follow these steps to index and search the data.

Create A Content Source

This series of steps builds upon the external content type created in part 1of this blog post series.

Log into your SharePoint Server with credentials that have the permission to administer the SharePoint search service
Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products, SharePoint 2010 Central Administration
Click Manage Service Applications
Click the link corresponding to your Search Service Application
In the ribbon, click Manage (see screenshot below)

When the page refreshes, click Content Sources
When the page refreshes, click New Content Source
In the name textbox enter Flat File Data
Select the Line of Business Data Content Source Type radio button
When the page refreshes, select the Business Data Connectivity service running on your server in the Business Data Catalog Service Application dropdown list
Select the Crawl selected external data source radio button
Check the checkbox next to the FlatFileLOBSystemInstance external data source
Check the Start full crawl of this content source checkbox
Click OK

When the page refreshes, click the Refresh link until the Status for the Flat File Data Content Source says Idle

Create A Search Scope

After creating the content source, create a new search scope to make the content source searchable.

Log into your SharePoint Server with credentials that have the permission to administer the SharePoint search service
Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products, SharePoint 2010 Central Administration
Click Manage Service Applications
Click the link corresponding to your Search Service Application
In the ribbon, click Manage

When the page refreshes, click New Scope
In the Title textbox enter Flat File Data Source
Click OK
When the page refreshes, click the Add rules link next to the Flat File Data Source search scope

In the Scope Rule Type section, select the Content Source radio button
In the Content Source dropdown select Flat File Data
In the Behavior section select the Include – Any item that matches this rule will be included, unless the item is excluded by another rule radio button
Click OK

When the page refreshes, click Search Administration
When the page refreshes, click Start update now

Refresh the page until the scope update process completes

Create A Search Center Site

This example assumes a search center site must be created on your SharePoint server. If you already have one created you can skip to the next series of steps to configure the search scopes dropdown list

Open your SharePoint web site in a web browser
Click Site Actions
Select New Site
Click the Search tab

\n Note: The Search tab may or may not be available, depending on the template your SharePoint site is based upon. In this example my SharePoint site is a team site, which supports the creation of Search Center sub sites.

Select the Basic Search Center template
In the Name textbox enter Search
In the URL textbox enter search

After the Basic Search Center site is created click Site Actions
Select Site Settings
Click Go to top level site settings
Click Search scopes
Select the Use custom scope radio button
Enter the path to your Basic Search Center sub site

\n Note: In my example the search center site is a sub site two levels deep, under the sites URL. That’s why you see /sites/team/search in the screenshot below.

What do you do if you accidentally enabled a Managed Environment in the Power Platform and you want to make the Environment non-Managed again? There is no way in the Power Platform Admin Center to Disable / Turn Off a Managed Environment, you can only Enable or Delete Managed Environments in the Admin Center. To Disable / Turn Off a Managed Environment, and go back to a non-Managed Environment, you must use PowerShell. Here's how to do it:

Open a PowerShell prompt as Administrator.

\n\n\n\n

Install PowerShell

\n\n\n\n

Install-Module -Name Microsoft.PowerApps.Administration.PowerShell

\n\n\n\n

Log in with an account that has permissions to administer Environments. The following command will open an authentication prompt. The prompt supports MFA.

Add-PowerAppsAccount -Endpoint prod

\n\n\n\n

Run this code that sets protectionLevel to Basic, which turns an Environment from Managed to non-Managed.

Run this command to apply the changes to the Environment you want to convert from Managed to non-Managed. Make sure to replace the Environment Id accordingly.

There are several products on the market that make it easy to move your lacrosse goal. I investigated them and then created my own to save my yard, my back, and my money. An added bonus is you can store your goal on the transporter to keep it off the ground and free from dirt and moisture.

Instructions

\n\n\n\n

Lay the goal on top of the 4x4.

\n\n\n\n

Mark the 4x4 where you want to cut it. Leave a little room on the ends to install a stopper (scroll down to see the picture with the stopper) to prevent the goal from sliding off the end. I left about 2\" of space on either side of the goal.

\n\n\n\n

Cut the 4x4 to the length that makes sense for your goal. I went with 80\" for my 4x4.

\n\n\n\n

Mark the center of each end of the 4x4. Then use a 7/16\" (or the appropriate size bit that is small enough that the threads on the lag screw will still bite into the wood) drill bit to drill a hole as deep as the threads on your lag screw. The lag screws are the axles for the wheels. In my case I used a boring bit, and the hole was over 4\" deep. This is the most important step. If you drill this hole off-center or off-axis the tires will not be aligned properly. If the pressure treated wood is fresh and wet, this could be challenging. Take your time, get it right the first time.

\n\n\n\n

Use a large socket wrench to screw the lag screws into the 4x4 until all the threads are engaged. Don't put your wheel or spacer on yet. Leave them off so you can concentrate on screwing in the screw perfectly. This is the 2nd most important step. If you screw it in on an angle, the tires will not be aligned properly. This is not easy; you will need to put a lot of muscle into this.

\n\n\n\n

Use a large socket wrench to un-screw the lag screws from the 4x4 all the way. Be careful when you take out the lag screw, it could be quite hot from the friction.

\n\n\n\n

Lay the goal on top of the 4x4 and center it.

\n\n\n\n

Cut some of the 21\" 2x4 to make little stoppers for top ends of the 4x4. You will do this 2 times, one for each end.

\n\n\n\n

Align the stopper on top of the 4x4 and drill holes in the 2x4 stopper you just made. Go all the way through so you mark the 4x4 with holes. Remove the stopper and finish drilling out the holes in the 4x4. You will do this 2 times, one for each end.

\n\n\n\n

Screw the stoppers to the 4x4 with the deck screws. You will do this 2 times, one for each end.

\n\n\n\n

Cut some 2x4 to make a brace for the goal posts to prevent the goal from sliding off the 4x4. I made my braces 8\" long. You will do this 2 times, one for each goal post.

\n\n\n\n

Align the brace on the side of the 4x4 and drill holes in the 2x4 braces you just made. Go all the way through so you mark the 4x4 with holes. Remove the brace and finish drilling out the holes in the 4x4. You will do this 2 times, one for each end.

\n\n\n\n

Screw the brace to the 4x4 with the deck screws. You will do this 2 times, one for each end.

\n\n\n\n

Pass the lag screw through the wheel, add the spacer on the other side, then use the large socket wrench to tighten the screw. You will do this 2 times, one for each end.

Walk around the back of your goal and grab the 2x4 and lift up the goal.

Now, add a little flair and make it easier to lift the 2x4 by adding a custom handle. This beauty was made by my Dad when he created our treehouse when I was a boy. It lives on today as part of our lacrosse transporter! I attached it with 2 deck screws.
