{"id":916,"date":"2013-07-02T15:09:41","date_gmt":"2013-07-02T21:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/?p=916"},"modified":"2013-07-02T15:21:44","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T21:21:44","slug":"fixing-a-broken-hyper-v-vhd-chain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/fixing-a-broken-hyper-v-vhd-chain\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing A Broken Hyper-V VHD Chain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago I mounted a Hyper-V VHD on my Windows 8 laptop so I could browse it in Windows Explorer (see below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/image_thumb.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"509\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After I was done browsing the files in the VHD I un-mounted the VHD, like this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/image1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/image_thumb1.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"506\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, I tried to start the Hyper-V VM.\u00a0 Uh-oh!\u00a0 The VM would not start!\u00a0 I received an error from the Hyper-V MMC that contained the following message <strong>\u201cThe chain of virtual hard disks is inaccessible. There was an error opening a virtual hard disk further up the chain.\u201d<\/strong> You can see the full error message in the screenshot below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19e8d12b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;\" title=\"SNAGHTML19e8d12b\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19e8d12b_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML19e8d12b\" width=\"508\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, a little fiddling around with the Hyper-V MMC led me to a solution which was really easy to implement.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how I went about fixing the error.<\/p>\n<p>First, I opened up the <strong>Settings<\/strong> for the VM.\u00a0 Next, I selected the<strong> Hard Drive<\/strong> in the Hardware list, and clicked the <strong>Inspect b<\/strong>utton, see below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19e029a6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;\" title=\"SNAGHTML19e029a6\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19e029a6_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML19e029a6\" width=\"518\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Virtual Hard Disk Properties, I saw an error reported and I clicked the Reconnect <strong>button<\/strong> (see below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19f065114.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;\" title=\"SNAGHTML19f06511[4]\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19f065114_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML19f06511[4]\" width=\"517\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, I clicked the <strong>Next<\/strong> button and saw the Parent disk path was incorrect (see below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19f30036.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;\" title=\"SNAGHTML19f30036\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/SNAGHTML19f30036_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML19f30036\" width=\"516\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I clicked the <strong>Browse<\/strong> button and located the VHD file for my Hyper-V VM.\u00a0 I also selected the <strong>Ignore ID mismatch<\/strong> checkbox, then clicked the <strong>Finish <\/strong>button.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I closed all the settings windows and attempted to start the Hyper-V VM.\u00a0 It worked perfectly!\u00a0 Victory!\u00a0 As Hannibal Smith would say, \u201cI love it when a plan comes together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In case you are curious, this behavior can be repeated consistently.\u00a0 I went through this process a couple of time to validate it works consistently before creating this blog post.\u00a0 I hope this helps you out if you encounter this error.<\/p>\n<p>PS: There about 109 days left until the lifts re-open for ski season in Colorado.\u00a0 (Not that I keep track or anything.)\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/toddbaginski.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wlEmoticon-smile.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago I mounted a Hyper-V VHD on my Windows 8 laptop so I could browse it in Windows Explorer (see below).
