following applications open on the <br \/>\nhost machine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 Instances of Internet Explorer <\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Outlook <\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Office Communicator <\/li>\n<li>Windows Live Messenger <\/li>\n<li>Hyper-V Manager <\/li>\n<li>Windows Explorer <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results are quite interesting.\u00a0 A few years ago virtual machines running on external hard drives <br \/>\n<em><strong>ALWAYS<\/strong><\/em> out-performed virtual machines running on my laptop&#8217;s C:.\u00a0 However, as these tests <br \/>\nindicate, with the technology advancements in laptop processors, memory, motherboards and <br \/>\nhard disks an external hard disk no longer provides a significant performance gain, if any.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to note that although the eSATA interface does not offer a significant <br \/>\nperformance boost for virtual machines, it does offer a significant performance boost associated with <br \/>\ncopying large files (such as virtual hard disks) and performing system backups.\u00a0 I was able to use <br \/>\nthe built in Windows Server Backup to back up my C: (74.8GB of data) in less than 20 minutes. <br \/>\nThe same backup operation took over an hour with USB 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>What about you?\u00a0 Have you seen the same behavior in your
