Are you looking to create a mobile application that works on many different devices and integrates with SharePoint? If so, you’ve come to the right spot! In this article just published by SharePoint Pro magazine I describe the different approaches you can take to build cross device compatible mobile applications and provide you with some concrete examples that demonstrate how to go about it. The article discusses the tradeoffs between building native applications vs. HTML5 applications, how to use PhoneGap to create cross device compatible HTML5/JavaScript mobile applications, and demonstrates how to authenticate to SharePoint sites and perform CRUD operations on SharePoint list data.

Next month, in a follow up article I’ll demonstrate how to use more of the SharePoint APIs in a cross device compatible approach. Stay tuned!

I’ve seen this issue pop up a few times over the last year or two and it again came up in a discussion recently, so I decided to blog it.

When you add a Content Query Web Part to a SharePoint Page the option to Play media links in browser is checked by default.

When this option is checked the PlayInMediaBrowser property is set to true. Like this:

<property name="PlayMediaInBrowser" type="bool">True</property>

This value controls whether or not the Content Query Web Part loads the mediaplayer.js file that controls the SharePoint Silverlight Media Player and wires up the SharePoint Silverlight Media Player to play media files when links to them are clicked on the page. Since some web browsers cannot handle Silverlight, setting this value to true could cause errors.

If you look at the source of the page when you add a Content Query Web Part it looks like this when PlayMediaInBrowser is set to true.

When you set PlayMediaInBrowser to false, or you remove the CQWP from the page, the code to load the media player disappears.

If you take a closer look at the Content Query Web Part you will see OnPreRender is what is loading the mediaplayer.js file and calling the functions to wire it up. OnPreRender looks at the PlayMediaInBrowser property and renders accordingly.

Make sure you hit CRTL-F5 when refreshing the browser page or clear your browser cache after making the changes or you will not see the change take effect.

If you want to learn more about the mediaplayer.js file and the functions SharePoint uses to wire up the SharePoint Silverlight Media Player or you want to wire up the SharePoint Silverlight Media Player yourself for a custom solution then check out the magazine article I wrote on this subject.

John Liu also discusses this topic in his blog post.

I’ve got the demo applications all dialed in for my SharePoint Conference 2011 session! Darrin Bishop, Matthew McDermott, Gary Lapointe and I have all spent time getting the demo application and environment in tip top shape to make for a killer session.

Here’s the session description and some sneak peak screenshots of the application. Come to the session to see the rest of what the application can do!

The session runs from 3:45-5PM Pacific Time on Monday, October 3rd! Hope to see you there!

Now that you’ve created a Windows Phone 7 application that integrates with SharePoint 2010, it’s time to take it to the next level and integrate social features. In this session, you will learn how to use the social capabilities SharePoint has to offer such as people search, user profile data, activity feeds, and colleagues. You will also learn how to provide push notifications in Windows Phone 7 applications that alert users when SharePoint list data, or social data has changed. Finally, you will learn how to use external social web sites like Twitter and Facebook to compliment your social functionality and broaden the reach of your application to the world.

Your SharePoint colleagues:

Today marks the official unveiling of the SharePoint 2010 and Windows Phone 7 Training Course! If you are looking to create Windows Phone 7 mobile applications that integrate with SharePoint this is the kit for you. This kit was developed by Darrin Bishop, Matthew McDermott, and myself. We also worked very closely with Paul Stubbs, Dave Pae, and several engineers at Microsoft throughout the project. Thanks for all your help guys!

The kit takes a soup to nuts approach that begins by showing you how to set up a Windows Phone 7 development environment and eventually ramps up to some very complex functionality such as how to integrate with SharePoint and Windows Azure.

In the kit, you will find a total of 25 labs that include step by step instructions and sample source code. Here’s a partial listing of the labs in the kit. Wow, what a list!

I’m excited to announce that I’ve been selected to speak at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2011, in Anaheim, CA. Lately I’ve been doing a ton of work with SharePoint and Windows Phone 7 integration and that’s what I’ll be speaking about. Here’s some more details about my session. Hope to see you there!

Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2011
October 3-6, 2011 – Anaheim, CA

Integrating SharePoint Social features into your Windows Phone 7 Application

Now that you’ve created a Windows Phone 7 application that integrates with SharePoint 2010, it’s time to take it to the next level and integrate social features. In this session, you will learn how to use the social capabilities SharePoint has to offer such as people search, user profile data, activity feeds, and colleagues. You will also learn how to provide push notifications in Windows Phone 7 applications that alert users when SharePoint list data, or social data has changed. Finally, you will learn how to use external social web sites like Twitter and Facebook to compliment your social functionality and broaden the reach of your application to the world.

SharePointPro Connections magazine just published my second article in a two part series about creating mashup applications in SharePoint 2010.

In the first article, I walk you through how to integrate BCS data with External Lists and Silverlight applications and how to use Bing maps to map the BCS data. I also demonstrate how to use Silverlight to Silverlight communication.

In the second article, I demonstrate how to work with videos and the Assets Library in SharePoint 2010 and how to wire up the out of the box Silverlight video player and the SharePoint ratings controls using JavaScript. I also discuss how to communicate between a Silverlight application and a web page.

This series of articles contains all the code from my how to make You Tube with SharePoint session and my creating Mashups in SharePoint 2010 that numerous folks ask me about each week. Enjoy!
